Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles. With amazing landscapes and diverse cultures that is all over the country, there is really something for everybody to enjoy. Being one of the top destinations all over the world, I wanted to experience more of the provinces than that of the capital region. That is why I chose to explore Chiang Rai.
Chiang Rai is the northernmost city of Thailand. It is 860km north of Bangkok, 200km from Chiang Mai, and neighboring the countries of Laos and Myanmar.
A common mistake of travelers is that they just make Chiang Rai a part of their side trip. Well infact, there are more things to enjoy here than those of the other cities. But then, the culture and food of Thailand are definitely incredible and will truly captivate you all throughout your journey.
During my week long trip to the northern side of Thailand, here’s a list of my favorite places to visit and things to do in Chiang Rai.
Wat Rong Khun
There are numerous temples in Thailand but I have never seen anything quite like this. Also known as the White Temple, Wat Rong Khun is a Buddhist temple located at Mueang, Chiang Rai District.
Most Buddhist temples are colored gold, but the artist namely Chalermchai Rositpipat, who designed the temple, felt that gold was suitable for people who lust for evil deeds, that is why he chose white as a sign of sacredness and purity.
But here’s a cool thing. The temple’s toilet is super gold and sparkling clean, making it one the best toilets I have ever seen. Haha!
You can enjoy the area for free but only outside the fence where I am standing at. Beyond that fence, you need to pay THB50 if you wish to get closer to the temple.
The temple is one of the most visited sites in the city so expect a lot of tourists. Better be there early in the morning to avoid too much crowd.
All I can say from start to finish of my visit was Wow! It is so beautiful. I really couldn’t take my eyes off of it.
The Golden Triangle
The border turned tourist attraction is the division of three Asian nations namely Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. Geographically speaking, it is the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak Rivers in between these 3 said countries.
Here’s a trivia, the place was named as The Golden Triangle because it has been the most extensive opium producing areas in Asia and the world since the 1950’s, and most of the world’s heroin came from here until the 21st Century.
You’ll encounter this ASEAN chair or the Association of South East Asian Nations chair while strolling around. So raise your flag!
Some shrines like this one can also be seen in the area, you take some good photos for free. It looks small in photos but it is huge in person.
A cool temple is also located along the Golden Triangle vicinity, like this one with a giant golden Buddha on a huge boat.
It’s a bit cool because you get to see 3 countries at the same time.
You can visit Laos and Myanmar but you have to cross borders with the help of a guide on board the boat that offer tours as well, so don’t forget to bring your passports and some cash for some payments.
Oh! And here’s a tip, souvenirs around the area is cheaper than those in the city. Enjoy!
Wat Rong Suea Ten
One unique temple found in Chiang Rai is the beautiful Blue Temple. It is located at Mueang Chiang Rai District, near the city center.
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by these 2 gigantic blue statues that are so alluring. It’s just the first part, the temple itself will impress you.
Rong Suea Ten in Thai means house of the dancing tiger, historically, the area where the temple stands was full of wildlife particularly tigers. It is a Buddhist temple located at the Rimkok district. The temple is a bit new , as it was built in 2016, but its unique features, artistic and detailed designs in whatever your sight could see makes it one of the must visit temples in Thailand.
Upon entry inside the temple, this enormous white Buddha will be seen. You’ll notice that all the parts of the temple, even the posts and walls are intricately painted.
Expect lots of tourists in the area but if you go a bit earlier than the usual tour schedules, you’ll be able to enjoy the temple by yourself.
The Elephant Sanctuary
Elephants has always a good place in my heart. Those humongous creatures that are very gentle.
One of the main reasons for me to travel to Thailand was to volunteer at an elephant sanctuary. Not knowing that you still need to pay for the volunteering activity.
It was really heartbreaking that time because as we were approaching the sanctuary, we saw some of the elephants being controlled by people using sticks and whips. I would like to share to you that those things aren’t good for the poor creatures.
You don’t need to ride them for you to take good photos. A pat or a rub on their trunks and a squad of bananas for their huge tummies are already good enough.
Let us all be friendly and kind to animals.
At Waterside Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai is a place where food trip is at its best. Scattered everywhere, from the busy road sides to the quiet narrow streets, you’ll find a place to eat. Actually even at the river side.
At Waterside Chiang Rai is located at Bannfangmin Rd, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Rai along the beautiful Maekok River.

Wat Huai Pla Kang
This tourist attraction will be one of the most amazing places you’ll encounter in Chiang Rai. You’ll be able to see not just one, but three different temples in one complex. Temples that are guarded by the dragon snake mythical creatures that will either scare you or mesmerize you.
The Giant Guan Yin Temple
The temple is mistakenly referred as the BIG BUDDHA OF CHIANG RAI. It isn’t actually a Buddha, rather a representation of Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. Standing on top of a hill, this 23 stories high Guan Yin Temple Statue showcases a magnificent view from the top. It is definitely massive but a beautiful creation.
The Small White Temple
The Small White Temple is located in between the 2 other attractions in the complex. It has a very artistic design and calm ambiance.
9 Tier Pagoda
Inside are numerous wooden Guan Yin statues of different sizes scattered in every floor of the pagoda.
You can actually climb the stairs up to the highest floor to witness a magnificent view of Chiang Rai. It is exhausting but what you’ll see after is worth the climb.
Bun Fai Festival
Another way to enjoy a different culture is to blend yourself in a gathering like the festival I went into.
There are lots of local festivals but the time I went there was the season of the Bun Fai Fest or the Pump Festival at the northern part of Chiang Rai.
The locals gather at the riverbanks with their umbrellas and mats, dance to the rhythm of the band music, the all time favorite food trip, swimming, and of course the beer friends are always present.
I have met a lot of people here, and all of them thought that I was Thai until I started speaking. Of course, I am Asian so, I look Asian.
The drinking and dancing was the fun part because everyone was very happy celebrating. You should try attending a local fest when you get there too. It will be awesome!
Wat Tham Pla
As the name of the temple implies, “pla” meaning fish, I was expecting a lot of waters and fish. But as I enter the temple grounds, what I saw was a horde of monkeys all around the place, also acquiring its name as the Monkey Temple.
Monkeys are everywhere so you need to be cautious all the time. There are sticks available upon entry but make sure use them for emergency protection only.
Also found here is the smaller sized version of temple guards like those at the Grand Palace in Bangkok.
You can climb up the trail up the mountains and you’ll be able to reach the cave temples at the top. We weren’t able to go there because it was a bit late.
The temple is far from the city that is why there are less tourists in the area. There is no entrance fee and the temple opens from 6AM-6PM.
Kiengdoi Cafe - The Rice Field Coffee Shop
While roaming around, you’ll notice that coffee shops are everywhere, but this one located in the rice fields caught my attention.
You can enjoy your cold coffee or any drink you like on the huts before going to your next destination.
Kiengdoi is located at Nang Lae, Mueang Chiang Rai District and and is open from 9AM-8PM daily.
The Clock Tower
Designed by the great Chalermchai Rusitpat of the magnificent white temple, you will be mesmerized by the beauty of the Golden Clock Tower. Then you can visit a local night market afterwards. That is a must in your itinerary.
The Local Thai Food And Thai Beer
Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to food. Trying out some of the most unfamiliar tastes to your pallet is somewhat crazy experience. From the sweetest of the desserts to the creepiest of the crickets and worms. These are the Thai food I had during my trip. I can’t name them one by one but the collage will tell you what I meant about Thai Food.
Note: If you try to order food in Thailand, make sure to ask if it is spicy or not. Then you can tell whether what level of spiciness you would like your food to be. When they say it’s a little spicy, it is still super spicy. Hahaha!
Beer is a good friend. It will always be there for you, whether you’re happy or feeling down, or even if it’s just an ordinary day.
This is not a paid advertisement but what more better way to enjoy Thailand than having local Thai beer.
I tried 2 of them. First is SIngha, the friend that will make you sing your heart out. Second is Chang, the friend that will give you an awesome changover! Cheers!
The Awesome Thai People
One of the main reasons I travel is to immerse myself in the lives of local people where I travel to. Being able to fulfill that in Chiang Rai is a very memorable experience for me. On the first few days of my stay, I already felt the care, love, and trust of the people that surrounded me. I requested that there will be no special treatment, just the normal way of living. I will eat what they eat, drink what they drink, and try to do things their way. The only difference is that I can’t speak the language but I tried to learn some. Despite the language barrier, I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all, and I had a true family to keep, friends I will always cherish, and memories I will forever treasure. It has been a wonderful journey and I can’t wait to see you again.

It feels great to explore new places but it is always better to be a responsible traveler. You can have fun as much as you want but let us all maintain the beauty and cleanliness of each of the places we visit, so that others can also enjoy the experience.
